BSNL's EVDO In Hyderabad Review

After a thorough research about BSNL's EVDO card 2 mb/s , I had a horrific experience bringing it home. Here is how it went and my comments on the newly launched internet card by bsnl. I went to the Telephone bhavan (Khairtabad) and enquired about the card, plans and coverage information. I got very little information from them, as they themselves had no knowledge about it lol, suprisingly they called it a customer service center. After 3 days of struggle I got the card today!.

Here are the important points to remember:
  • Card costs 4000 Rs to buy or we can get it on a rental basis. I'd suggest you to take card on the rental basis (550 Rs per month + 200 Rs rent). But intially you got to pay 1562 Rs it includes deposit and installations charges.
  • BSNL says they are providing 2 mb/s unlimited but most of the towers in hyderabad are still 140 KB/s. They are saying, all the towers will be upgraded to 2 mb/ps in 3-6 months.

  • Coverage of the towers is still a problem. I am using it in Banjara Hills, here the signal is good but in Masab tank and other interior areas its very poor.
My net speed is varying from 100kbps - 130 kbps, and browsing speed is not so good.

Bottom Line: Don't expect too much from EV-DO as of now, better wait for few more month(s).

Disclaimer: The coverage info is totally based on my research in the city (Hyderabad), It may wary.

Update: Jan-17-10

I appreciate all your feedback, after few months of usage I thought I should post the recent update, how its working currently.

Following things are improved:

1. Signals: Signals are improved now, and I get full signals and light is always green most of the time, which is very important to get good speed.

2. Now we can download from Rapidshare and other sites.

3. Can connect to VPN without any issues.

4. Speed is improved, now I get avg download speed of 40 KB/s (as shown in the image) and Torrent speed of 70 KB/s, again this may vary based on signals.

Share your thoughts on the recent updates!!

If you are from Hyderabad..Not now..wait for 3 more months. According to BSNL guys..it takes at least 3-4 months to upgrade and fix VPN issues etc.

  6. Has the EVDO speed improved now? If so, in which areas is it good?

  7. @Sudheer

Not much improvement...I have tested the speed in Kalyan Nagar (S.R Nagar Area), Download speed is around 9-10 KB/s. So far, I have tested it in Banjara Hills, Masab Tank and Kalyan Nagar..Speeds are around 10-15 KB/s. And the VPN and Public IP issues are still not yet resolved.

  19. @Praveen

I don't have the information of srinagar colony, but I am sure it will good in that area. I want let you know few points before going for it:

    1. EVDO uses same public so, you cannot download from rapidshare, because many people use the same ip.

    2. You can connect to VPN.

    3. Last but not least don't expect 100-200 KB/s download speed, Signal on software shows 1mb/s but you get downloads around 35-50 KB/s. It again varies.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Contact those khairtabad guys, they might have given the wrong password/username. Usually password would be same of the username i.e is your number which they gave to you..starting with 40.

  48. Does it work as well on a Mac?

    ReplyDelete
  49. BSNL EVDO is gives very speed in Bangalore. Unless you live right beside a EVDO tower, don't take it. BSNL 3G service is much better.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Also, EVDO works on a mac, but you need to do some configurations manually.
